about
Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the last communist-ruled countries in the world. Although the constitution provides for religious freedom, the atheist regime tries to keep religion under strict control with a system of obligatory registrations. From time to time the government closes churches, especially in the highlands. In November 2004, new regulations on religion came into force. Though many feared this would lead to increasing oppression, it seems they have resulted in slight improvements.
Human rights
- There are several restrictions:
- Press is strictly controlled.
- There are still a number of political prisoners incarcerated.
- Unions are not allowed in the country, except those organs established by the government to represent different sectors of society like Workers’ Union, women, youth (Young Pioneers), children, etc.
- Overseas travel for citizens very difficult.
