about

Egypt

Estimated number of Christians: 8-10 Million 11% Coptic Orthodox; 1 Million 1.3% Coptic Evangelical; 300,000 0.3% Coptic Catholics. Major sources of oppression & persecution: Fundamental Islamists, the government and the Orthodox church.

Famous for its ancient hieroglyphics and pyramids, modern Egypt is less well known for the conflicts over religious beliefs and oppression resulting from it.

60 million (that’s 88% of the population) are Muslims. Many cases of persecution are against Muslim-background believers who are rejected socially and culturally for converting to Christianity. Fundamental Islamists cause discrimination on the grassroots level even though they are not in power, but the government also has strict regulations against church activities. There are around 1,100 evangelical churches in Egypt. Evangelical Christians also face persecution from the Orthodox Church.
